The Shenandoah Community Foundation

The Shenandoah Community Foundation announced it has awarded $48,000 to area non-profit organizations. The grants were made possible by a generous gift from Woodstock Anonymous.

The following organizations received grants:

A Small Hand  $6,000 Priority addressed: Family, child & Social Welfare The grant will provide formula, age-appropriate foods, and disposable diapers to infants enrolled in government supplemental feeding programs.

Earth Korps Inc $2,500 Priority addressed: Environment The grant will be used to remove 500-2000 pounds of trash from the Shenandoah River each week; plant native trees to replenish natural habitats for indigenous species and prevent bank erosion; and replace junked cars along the river with natural stone.

Healthy Families-Shenandoah  $2,500 Priority addressed: Family, Child & Social Welfare The grant provides partial funding salary and benefits for a full-time Family Support Worker to make home visits to qualified first-time parents in the county.

Help With Housing, Inc.  $8000 Priority addressed: Family, Child & Social Welfare The grant will help 15-20 qualified homeowners living in Shenandoah County to make adaptive home improvements for handicapped residents, including plumbing, electrical, ramps, lifts, accessible showers, and grab bars.

Humane Society of Shenandoah County  $1,000 Priority addressed: Health The grant will assist the cost of spaying and neutering of cats and dogs.

Mt. Olive and Shiloh UMC Enrich Program $2,000 Priority addressed: Education The grant supports academic and social enrichment, including healthy meals, for at-risk children.

Response  $2,500 Priority addressed: Family, Child & Social Welfare The grant supports Response’s “Client Need Fund” by providing up to 50 clients with what they need to secure employment (e.g., medications, transportation, vital statistic records) in order to leave abusive situations.

SEARCH  $3,000 Priority addressed: Civic affairs & Education The grant will supplement an unexpected state funding shortfall to help provide residents with employment at ShenPaco, a non-profit that provides employment for adults with limited capabilities.

Shenandoah Alliance for Shelter $2,000 Priority addressed: Family, Child & Social Welfare The grant will supplement federal funding shortfall for helping homeless families transition back into permanent housing.

Shenandoah Area Agency on Aging $2,000 Priority addressed: Health The grant will help provide Meals on Wheels for qualified Shenandoah County residents.

Shenandoah County Public Schools $750 Priority addressed: Education The grant provides quality child care while qualified parents take a five-session Love and Logic class that teaches better parenting skills and aims to help parents raise children into responsible adults.

Shenandoah County Free Clinic $5,000 Priority addressed: Health The grant will help fund a social worker one day a week whose job will be to help monitor patients with mental health needs and to help other patients access needed resources and programs.

Smart Beginnings, Shenandoah Valley  $4,500 Priority addressed: Education; Family, Child & Social Welfare The grant will provide four pre-school scholarships for disadvantaged children in Shenandoah County and help establish a Scholarship Advisory Board.

The Art Group Gallery $1,250 Priority addressed: Arts & Culture The grant will support TAGG’s outreach program to provide art education to at-risk and special needs youth and adults.

The Volunteer Farm $5,000 Priority addressed: Family, Child & Social Welfare; Civic affairs The grant will provide completion of an irrigation project (including storage shed for pump and irrigation equipment) that will make fresh food growing operations more efficient.
