Recent Grants 2013

The Shenandoah Community Foundation announced it has awarded $43,408 to area non-profit organizations. The grants were made possible by a generous gift from Woodstock Anonymous.

The following organizations received grants:

A Small Hand  $10,000

Priority addressed: Family, Child, & Social Welfare

Specialist food pantry serving infants (newborn-36 months) in need. The Grant will purchase formula, food, and diapers.
Enrich Program  $3,000
Priority addressed: Education and Health

Community support program for children at risk. Grant will support next summer’s program that provides two meals a day, physical exercise, math and reading practice and community involvement for at risk children during the summer.
Help with Housing, Inc.  $6,000
Priority addressed: Family, Child, & Social Welfare

A regional non-profit housing organization serving Clarke, Warren, Shenandoah and Frederick Counties and the City of Winchester. They make emergency home repairs for low-income homeowners, many of whom are elderly, disabled or both. Grant will fund critical home repairs needed in Shenandoah County.
Humane Society of Shenandoah County  $1000
Priority addressed: Health

Grant will spay and rabies vaccinate female cats and neuter and vaccinate  male cats.
Jobs and Services Daily (JASD)  $1,000
Priority addressed: Education

JASD mission is to provide jobs for the unemployed, underemployed and small businesses trying to maintain productivity and needed services for those not fully able to fully afford those services. They act as a job bank where people needing services register their needs and those in need of work register their skill, trade or profession. JASD pays the difference between what the person can afford and the reduced rate received through the job bank.

Grant is for funding Children/Youth Programs which provides counseling, education, safety planning and other services to Children who have experienced sexual, domestic violence and/or abuse
Shenandoah Alliance for Shelter  $4,000
Priority addressed: Family, Child & Social Welfare

An organization committed to preventing homelessness and/or shelter homeless families, working with them to transition them back to permanent housing. Grant request will assist low income families with mandatory utility deposits and/or delinquent utility bills so that they can obtain permanent housing in Shenandoah County.
Shenandoah County Soccer League  $1,000
Priority addressed: Civic Affairs

The Shenandoah County Soccer League wants all kids to be able to sign up for soccer but there is a $50 registration fee which puts soccer out of reach for some families. The grant will provide money to be used as scholarships to cover the cost interested children whose families can’t afford the entrance fees.
Shenandoah Valley Lutheran Ministries  $5,000
Priority addressed: Family, Child & Social Welfare

Grant would be support for the Luke’s Backpack program which provides backpacks that contain meals and snacks for needy kids to use over the weekend when they don’t have access to the free or reduced lunch that the schools provide. The backpacks are sent home filled each weekend and the child return is it to school the next week for it to be refilled.
Skyline Community Action Partnership  $908.44
Priority addressed: Family, Child, & Social Welfare

A designated community action agency that provides free preschool and family services to households living below the poverty level. Grant will purchase equipment for the Head Start classrooms located in Woodstock, VA. $569.99 would buy a Ellis Dye cutting system and $338.45 a reading and listening center.
Smart Beginnings, Shenandoah Valley  $3,000
Priority addressed: Family, Child, & Social Welfare
A regional coalition focused on ensuring positive early childhood care and educational opportunities, ages birth to five years old. Grant will fund scholarships for three Shenandoah county children ages three to four in to attend private preschool.
Theatre Shenandoah $1,000
Priority addressed: Arts & Culture

Theatre Shenandoah is a non profit community theatre located in Edinburg, Virginia. Their mission is to provide a high quality theatre experience to participant and the Shenandoah valley populace.

The grant will help with the cost of a chair lift to allow handicap and elderly access to the theater space which is on the second floor of the building.
VECCA  $1,000
Priority addressed: Arts & Culture

VECCA wants to expand current children’s summer workshop programs and introduce workshops aimed at high school students. Grant is to purchase materials for workshops, art displays, compensate teachers, rental fees and advertising.
Wayside Theatre $1,000
Priority addressed: Arts & Culture

The grant request is for specifically support the position of Education Director which manages the Emerging Artists in Action program, the young performers’ workshops, and the Young Ambassadors’ Guild. The Emerging Artists in Action Program provides performance and leadership opportunities for young artists in Shenandoah, Page, and Warren counties
